American Achilles, the sequel to American Janus, continues the saga of the Clayton family into the early 20th century. The year is 1917. The towns of Winston and Salem have recently merged. With it’s booming tobacco and textile business, it is the fastest growing city in North Carolina. Yet, trouble is on the horizon. Europe’s disastrous three year war has created much anxiety in the United States, drawing the country inexorably into its vortex. And like most American families, the Claytons are torn and at odds with the country’s looming involvement.

Douglas Shouse is a passionate historian with a special interest in American military history. He is the author of American Janus, a historical fiction novel set in The American South with a dual storyline: the turn of the 20th century and the American Civil war and Southern Reconstruction. He spent more than thirty years as a marketing strategist in corporate brand marketing and marketing agencies where he honed his craft in creative writing.
He is a graduate of Wake Forest University with a B.A. in Economics and MBA from WFU’s School of Management. He lives in Winston-Salem with his lovely wife, Ruth. and their rambunctious Goldendoodle, Happy.
The novel also offers readers a glimpse into the Freedmen's Bureau and Southern Reconstruction, shedding light on the struggles of the formerly enslaved people and their quest for freedom and equality. "American Janus" also highlights North Carolina history and how it played a role in shaping the lives of the characters.
